In our daily life, we are surrounded by various kinds of sounds that are crucial for us humans make sense of our environment. But most of these sounds might be undesirable at times such as traffic and construction noise or hue and cry. Although we can cope with noise in our environment to a certain degree, we still get affected by it. The studies show that the prolonged exposure to poor or excessive noise might cause long-term health problems ranging from stress, poor concentration, productivity losses in the workplace, and communication difficulties and fatigue from lack of sleep, to more serious issues such as cardiovascular disease, cognitive impairment, tinnitus and hearing loss (1). To address this issue, we developed a smart earbuds system that offers us more control over the volume of the surrounding sounds such as by silencing everything or increasing the volume of a particular sound among others. It is designed inspired by owls’ unique and highly-developed auditory system. Thanks to the embedded artificial intelligence (AI) in owl, it can identify and sort out the sounds by their frequencies. The volume of the detected surrounding sounds can be adjusted separately either by simple gestures or via the touchpads on each earbud.
